How to Kill it During the Engagement Session

So, he got down on one knee and gave you a sparkly new rock? That love-glow looks oh so good on you! But how can you make the most of your engagement session and why should you have one? After shooting our fair share of couples and weddings, here’s our thoughts…

Call us gushy saps (you’d be right), but we love photographing couples during this season of their lives! It’s such a magical time and it goes by so dang quickly. An engagement session is a way to celebrate your committed love, and your last months and weeks before transitioning from singleness to being united. So much of love is about the little choices to put your partner above yourself. And what better space to capture those little nuggets of everyday love than a portrait session?
Another huge perk about the e-sesh is it gives you a chance to get to know us and our shooting style! Plus, you get some practice with being comfortable in front of the camera. You might even discover pictures aren’t so bad, or that you’re secretly a modeling pro! Come wedding day, you’ll know the drill and can just enjoy the day.

Ideally, you’ll want to schedule your session 4-8 months ahead to avoid stress, plus have time to order Save the Dates! Because our weekends are dedicated to weddings, we usually schedule engagements on weeknights, right around sunset for that gorgeous golden light. As long as light is great, we can do almost any location – beach, park, urban, even in your home. Feel free to get creative or pick a meaningful spot, or we have a list of favorite rad places. So… what should you wear?!

Outfit Inspiration

Instead of going matchy-matchy, try to pick outfits that compliment each other. Feeling stumped? Try only all cool tones or all warm tones.

Most patterns are actually okay. However, avoid graphics – they don’t look great for portraits. For patterns, just make sure they aren’t overwhelming and distracting.

Feel free to bring two outfits! Most couples like to do a dressier style first, and then a more casual style. This will give you two totally different looks.

Make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing. Your outfit should make you feel confident and happy, and if it doesn’t, find something else that makes you go *heart eyes*!

And finally, relax! You don’t need to be a pro – that’s why you hire us! Even we feel awkward in front of a camera and need a little help, so we understand! It’s just kind of part of being human. You can trust us to get the good angles, so you can enjoy each other.

Are you free spirited lovers looking for engagement photos? We shoot in Tampa, NY, CA, and anywhere else a plane will take us! Head over to our contact page to schedule a session!
